The jurassic of northern scotland: analogues for mid norway and viking graben margin deep marine sedimentation

Isle of skye and raasay

Middle Jurassic shallow marine sediments analogous to Mid Norway (Ile – Not – Garn formations).

At the scale of a North Sea tilted fault block.

Lower Toarcian Ocean Anoxic Level (source rock interval), correlative of basal Drake Formation.

Pliensbachian Scalpay Sandstone is time equivalent to the Cook / Tilje Formations.

Recognition of North Sea J sequence boundaries in outcrop.

Moray Firth coast

Only part of North Sea Basin that is exposed onshore.

Reservoirs and source rocks that are known offshore are exposed onshore
excellent example of Upper Jurassic deep marine sedimentation.

Along a tectonically active basin margin.

Good analogue for Brae Trend and Gudrun Trend deep marine sedimentation in South Viking Graben.

your trip, your way

The trip will be lead by Stuart Archer, Phil Copestake and Bill Wilks.

The central focus of this excursion will be to examine exposures analogous to deposition in the Mid-Norway and Viking Graben basins, highlighting the interplay between active tectonics and both shallow- and deep-marine sedimentation.

The field trip can be fully tailored to your needs with durations of 1 to 4 days. Itineraries can be customised to suit company requirements and can include non-geological activities if desired, e.g. archaeological and historical sites.

LOCATION

The Moray Firth Coast and the Isle of Syke and Raasay are easily accessible from Inverness Airport (1.5 hours – 3.5 hours), with additional airports at Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh.
