DHI: Hit or Miss? Who got it right…

If you visited the Merlin booth at the EAGE Annual 2026 conference in Aberdeen last week, you hopefully took part in our fun competition: DHI Hit or Miss?

We gave you five observed DHIs from various locations around the world, and you had to tell us whether you thought the wells that drilled them were successful, or whether they were a dry hole. Some people took an in-depth look at the seismic, a lot wanted more information, and some just took a good old educated guess. Fear not, we will reveal the correct answers in a newsletter post next week, but for now here are the results:

We had 145 entries of which 9 got full marks, getting 5/5 correct! Out of these correct entries we drew one name at random to win this excellent Cyphaspis eberhardi trilobite.

And the lucky winner is… Kamshat Ussenova. Congratulations.

Interestingly, nearly 60% of people correctly identified 3/5 DHIs, and 10% of people got 4/5 correct. We will publish more statistics on each question in our follow-up newsletter. Well done to everyone who took part, we hope you enjoyed it.

If you are disappointed not to have won this lovely fossil, you can purchase your own from bigfossil.com.
