Interpreting the bathroom

Eleanor Oldham

You don’t have to be a geologist to like rocks.  At least that’s what I infer from the popularity of geological tiles in bathrooms and kitchens.

The picture above was taken from the bathroom of a hotel I recently stayed in.  It certainly caused me to prolong my shower as I studied the geometries on offer!  The tiles themselves were fakes, offering just 6 designs in an unnaturally grey-scale palette, however, the geological order on show suggests they have their origins in a real rock.

This may be an optimistic thought for a Monday morning, but if non-geologists are willing to embrace rocks as decorative pieces in their home, perhaps they’re open to dialogue from geologists on more controversial issues.  There’s common ground here..

I hope you enjoy interpreting these bathroom tiles.
