During his semi-retirement, John Donato has been using some of his spare time to work with the academic ‘Beneath Britain Group’, formed as a joint initiative between UKOGL (UK Onshore Geophysical Library) and the Department of Earth Sciences at Oxford University. He has recently published a third paper on the Beneath Britain website, this time authored jointly with Chris Pullan (CP Exploration). A giant ichthyosaur fossil was discovered early last year in the Rutland Water reservoir, Leicestershire and it soon became apparent that it was of major importance for UK palaeontology. Here at Merlin, any new geological discovery is always of interest, especially when so close to home. However this time we have even more reason to shout about it as our very own stratigrapher, Dr Phil Copestake, was involved in dating the skeleton using associated microfauna. Merlin Sequence Stratigraphy

You may not be aware that our Stratigrapher, Dr Phil Copestake, was one of the original authors of a paper defining the J sequence stratigraphic scheme that has now become a standard followed by many companies in the North Sea Basin. Phil (together with co-author Dr Mark Partington) has recently been working on updates to the scheme in a new publication, which is to be published as a memoir of the Geological Society of London.
